학명은 Daucus carota L. 이며 종소명 carota는 '당근(carrot)'를 의미.
잎은 긴타원모양으로서 2~3개의 절편으로 이루어진 우상이거나 우상전열이며
절편은 선형 또는 피침형이고, 길이 2?15mm, 너비 0.5?4mm이다.
털이 없는 것에서부터 잎맥과 잎 가장자리에 센털이 있는것 까지 다양하다.
당근(Daucus carota subsp. sativa (Hoffm.) Arcang.)은 산당근의 아종이다.
